Nicecream cake with clean salted-caramel sauce

Are you a recovering dieter? I only ask because you’re on a healthy food and wellness blog, so you’re clearly someone who’s interested in respecting their body – good for you! When I chat to my readers and Shape University members, I find we all have a similar yet individual story. It usually begins with body loathing and poor body image, then moves to a period of strict dieting and disordered eating. Luckily for most of us, the story ends with a realisation that you can’t trick your body into sustainably losing weight – and a journey to a holistically…

Chocolate chickpea cookies

Do you ever have one of those days when you just really need a cookie? Not want, need. Nothing will fill the void. No matter how many pieces of fruit or roasted nuts you have, the craving remains. It might not be a cookie for you. Maybe chocolate, ice cream, chips and/or cheese is your vice. Whatever it is, I’m sure you’ve felt a strong food craving for it before. It’s usually a bit of sign that you’re depriving yourself a little too hard. It’s human nature to want something 100 times more when you’re told you can’t have it.…

Breakfast meal prep: brownie chocolate oatmeal

We’re more than halfway through healthy breakfast meal prep month in the Shape University community, have you been joining in? This all came about because I received a few emails and messages from ladies who asked me to bring back some of the challenges and themed months that I started last year. And you know what they say, ask and you shall receive! So far this month we’ve had a heavenly chocolate chia pudding to keep the Easter cravings away, and simple but delicious baked oatmeal muffins to mix up the overnight oat routine. If you want to be in…

Chocolate chia pudding

The chocolate season is nearly upon us. Is it just me or is grocery shopping 10 times harder at Easter time? Everywhere you look there’s chocolate! Easter eggs, chocolate bunnies, Easter-themed chocolate boxes. Chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate! You might be conscious of the chocolate cravings this subtle advertising can induce, or maybe you can’t figure out why you’re experiencing a strong appetite for the stuff late at night. Either way, constantly telling yourself you can’t have chocolate at Easter time probably won’t be that effective – and it’s definitely not much fun. Health benefits of chocolate Chocolate is often…

Velvety avocado chocolate mousse

Have you ever met those people that say they don’t like chocolate or that sweet things aren’t for them? I often think how much easier my life would be if I didn’t love desserts as much as I do. But dessert is basically my all-time favourite form of food in the entire world. When I made the decision to change my lifestyle, I thought I would have to part ways with my beloved desserts. No more cake, cookies, chocolate, brownies, ice cream, lollies or muffins. I remember wondering whether health and wellness was really worth giving that up – talk…

Healthy Desserts: Clean Mars Bars

Sometimes a gal just needs a treat. And sometimes you just need (not want, need) something that’s full of caramel and covered in chocolate to get through the day. I’ve written about my love affair with healthy desserts before. They are hands down the only reason I’ve been able to stick to this wellness journey for as long as I have – two years and counting! But unfortunately, most of the treats that are available to us to buy aren’t that nutritionally wonderful. Well actually, most of them offer little more than a bunch of sugar, questionable additives and limited…

Coconut chocolate nicecream

After an OTT, chocolate-filled Easter, rationalising with myself about the health properties of cacao, I got to thinking about the healthy chocolate recipes I’ve grown to love – and how they don’t leave me feeling over-indulged. Unsweetened cocoa powder is a well-used staple in my pantry and I add it to everything from oats to smoothies, to my favourite guilt-free dessert, “nicecream.” The name suggests a nicer version of ice cream, but I would be lying if I said it was as good as say, Ben Jerry’s New York Super Chunk Fudge (seriously, nothing could beat that stuff). Instead, I…

Healthy gooey chocolate oatmeal

What if I said you could have chocolate as part of a healthy lifestyle? What if I said you could have chocolate for breakfast as part of a healthy lifestyle? What if I said you could have chocolate for breakfast as part of a healthy lifestyle for under 400 calories? You probably wouldn’t believe me. But good news! Introducing my gooey, nutty chocolate oatmeal recipe. This chocolate oatmeal contains energy packed foods that will help you start your day with a bang. It also has plenty of healthy fats, fibre and protein to keep your motor running until lunchtime.…

Chocolate Protein Icecream

Since I’ve starting eating protein powder, I’m constantly on the look out for delicious and healthy recipes to add it into, as well as substitutes for formerly unhealthy, but delicious, treats. My latest creation is faux icecream. Icecream, which, get this, is actually good for you. Besides tasting excellent, the “icecream” contains only 170 calories less than 4g of fat 240mg of potassium and a whopping 20 grams of protein! (That’s a lot guys). It’s also a source of calcium, good carbohydrates and dietary fibre. I often enjoy this as a cool down post-workout snack that makes exercising that little…
